Biography

I have first degrees in English Literature from Cambridge University (BA and MA), and in Health Policy, Planning & Financing (MSc) from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine/London School of Economic and PhD in Environmental Epidemiology from the University of London.   I am now Honorary Professor in the Bartlett Development Planning Unit.  I was Reader/Professor of Ecology and Global Health at the LSHTM until 2012 and Honorary Full Professor of the UCL Institute of Health Equity in London from 2012-2018, and have been Visiting Full Professor in the National University of Tucuman in Argentina since 1998, and the Federal University of Parana in Brazil (2002-2005).  I am Fellow (by distinction) of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians, and International Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. I am winner of the Royal Society Kohn Award for Excellence in Engagement of the Public in Science, and the Mayor of London Academic Excellence Award in Public Engagement.

Research Summary

My research career of over 25 years has focused principally on links of urban equity, environment and health, and on social and environmental justice for disadvantaged communities internationally. I have lived and worked in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and have advised international UN agencies, including WHO, UNEP, UNDP, UNICEF, UNHabitat. My research supports NGO groups across the world, and have served on the executive boards of the International Association of Ecology and Health (IAEH), and the pan European NGO Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL).


I am on the board of six interdisciplinary international peer-reviewed journals. Environment and Urbanisation: Environmental Research Letters; International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health; Environmental Research, Open Urban Studies, and Environmental Development. I was on the founding editorial board of three of these journals and particularly support on-line and open access publishing. 

Teaching Summary

I have worked with DPU since 1994, both in a teaching capacity both in London and Argentina, and as an examiner on the PhD programme.  I am now working closely with the newly launched MSc Health in Urban Development, and teaching on both the Health, Social Justice and the City Module and the Urban Health and Development Planning Strategies Module of the new programme. I am also acting as International Advisor to the DPU Wellcome Trust project: Gaza the socio-politics of health, death and life.     At LSHTM,  I lead both in-house and DL MSc modules on Globalisation and Health, and teach on multiple MSc modules with LSHTM, including Ethics, Public Health and Human Rights; Environmental Epidemiology; Environment, Health and Sustainable Development; Issues in Public Health.  I have taught and examined interdisciplinary PhDs internationally for over 25 years, and was PhD programme director for the Faculty of Public Health at LSHTM for 10 years.
