Research Summary
Carey Young’s artistic work employs a variety of media, including video, installation, photography, text and performance, and is often concerned with the relationships between the body, language, rhetoric and systems of power. Using a variety of media including video, photography, installation and performance, many of her works have addressed the ‘corporate takeover’ of individual subjectivity and the public domain. Young has often involved external experts in the creative deveopment of her works, such as lawyers, call centre agents, presentation skills trainers, venture capitalists, physicists and computer hackers, and for the last fifteen years she has developed a number of works in which she uses law as an ‘artistic medium’.

Solo exhibitions of her work include Dallas Museum of Art (2017), Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2013); Eastside Projects, Birmingham and tour (2010–2011); the Contemporary Art Museum, St Louis, and The Power Plant, Toronto (both 2009), Thomas Dane (2008), Henry Moore Institute, Leeds (2004) and John Hansard Gallery (2001). Young has also recently participated in group exhibitions at Aspen Art Museum (2016), Centre Pompidou (2015), CA2M, Madrid (2014), Tate Liverpool (2014), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2012), the New Museum, New York (2011), MoMA/PS1, New York (2010) and Tate Britain (2010), as well as in the Taipei Biennial, Moscow Biennial, Sharjah Biennial, Performa Biennial and the Venice Biennale. A monograph on her work, Subject to Contract, was published by JRP|Ringier and Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in 2013, and the monograh Carey Young, Incorporated was published by Film and Video Umbrella and John Hansard Gallery in 2001. Her work is in the collection of Tate, Centre Pompidou, Migros Museum, the Art Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design, the Kadist Foundation, Institut d'Art Contemporain, Villeurbanne and Arts Council England, among others. Teaching Summary

I am based in the undergraduate Fine Art Media team, and also teach across the Slade at MA and PhD level. I have a special responsibility for Photography tuition within the Slade. I am also currently the Careers tutor for the Slade, and have developed a Careers programme for Slade students which covers topics such as studios, production facilities, artist residencies, artist fees and many other topics pertinent to working as a professional fine artist. This programme is considered 'best practice' within UCL and is now being used as a case study within the wider university community.

Prior to joining UCL I was a Senior Lecturer in Photography at London College of Communication from 2006 - 2011, and Senior Lecturer in Photography at the University of East London (2005 - 2006.)
