Research Summary

The Brierley lab investigates how neuronal circuits in the gut-brain axis control behaviour, particularly the regulation of appetite and bodyweight. We use in vivo and ex vivo systems neuroscience techniques (such as chemogenetics & optogenetics) in transgenic mice to characterise the neuroanatomy and physiological function of gut-brain circuitry, and determine how dysfunction in these circuits contributes to metabolic diseases such as obesity and cachexia.

Teaching Summary
I lecture on modules PHAR0002 (Introduction to the Mechanisms of Drug Action), PHAR0015 (Psychopharmacology), NEUR0009 (Metabolic Neuroscience) and host final year project students from a variety of MSci / MRes courses including Neuroscience, Biosciences and Biomedical Sciences.
