I have developed an internationally recognised clinical service, and concurrently researched delivery of psychologically-driven chronic illness management in adolescence. I direct an active audit programme described as the ‘most productive audit programme in the paediatric directorate’.

Innovative clinical interventions promoting self care and emotional well being have significantly improved the physical and mental health of young people with chronic illness. I am regularly invited to present keynote and plenary lectures at prestigious academic conferences. I have an outstanding record of academic publications in peer reviewed journals and academic text books with over 80 academic publications. I have established a significant grant income as a member of multidisciplinary collaborations within UCL as well as cross institution collaboration.
Obtained department of health funding for interventions to improve metabolic control in adolescent diabetes.
The DH has funded a 1.9million pound randomised control trial. The programme is designed to improve metabolic control and long term quality of life for children and adolescents with diabetes. I have also conducted a feasibility trial of web-based care combining quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
Developed an innovative rehabilitation programme for Chronic Fatigue and Chronic Pain Syndrome.
I have led a patient-centred approach for young people that is the basis of an innovative rehabilitation programme for CFS/CPS in adolescence.
Established an award winning novel weight management programme for adolescents.
The Healthy Eating Lifestyle Programme (HELP) has won several awards. It has been adapted for use in a community based intervention (Watch-It) evaluated in a 4 year Wellcome funded feasibility trial. The programme is being evaluated as part of a 2 million pound programme grant.
Completed the largest case-control study of meningitis outcomes in children and adolescents.
Studies assessing cognitive outcomes after meningococcal disease and pneumococcal meningitis has contributed to establishing the cost effectiveness of disease specific vaccinations.

Published on neuropsychological outcomes in young people with Tourette’s Syndrome, Eating Disorders and Leukaemia. These data have been used to inform educational planning and support.

Developed a questionnaire to assess quality of life in adolescents post meningitis.
The meningitis outcomes study identified cognitive deficits and limited medical and psychological follow up. As a member of the Quality of Life methodology advisory group I have developed a quality of life measure for adolescents post meningitis and young children living with chronic illness.
I was presented with the award for outstanding scientific achievement in clinical psychology by the faculty of clinical health psychology.
My publications have made a significant contribution to evidence based practice in paediatric psychology alongside medical practice My papers are regularly cited and are referenced for national clinical psychology training programmes. Paediatric and psychology journals have lower impact factors than equivalent medical journals however I have still been able to introduce paediatric clinical psychology and neuropsychology research findings and influence improved medical practice and patient care.
