Biography
I teach geography at Bradford Grammar School and also have a role in promoting Teaching and Learning at the school.  I founded 'Hopeful Education' in 2020: this is an initiative, formulated in a context of rising student anxiety and concern about global issues, aimed at helping young people to evaluate progress, believe in humanity, and create a better world.  I blog at www.alcock.blog.

I have been published in Teaching Geography, the Times Educational Supplement, Impact: The Journal of the Chartered College of Teaching, Geography Review, the Yorkshire Post, and I also create teaching and CPD resources for the Geographical Association.  I have taken part in consultations with the BBC, and I am part of the Tutor2U Geography team.

I have presented at conferences (in person and online) including the Geographical Association's annual conference, the GA's Geography Teacher Educators' conference, and the international Practical Pedagogies conference in Cologne.

I am an examiner for Edexcel A-Level (paper 2).

I am also a Level 2 Orienteering Coach and a UK Mountain Leader.

Research Summary
I am undertaking PhD research on the concept of 'progress' in the UK secondary school geography curriculum. This is a part-time course, which I began in September 2020.
