I completed an ESRC-funded PhD at the Institute of Education examining transitions to parenthood and a Postdoctoral Fellowship examining housing transitions, both using birth cohort data (2005-2010). Prior to returning to the IOE in late 2014, I was Head of Policy and Research at Relate (a charity specialising in the delivery of counselling and promotion of mental wellbeing) and Head of Research at the International Longevity Centre-UK (ILC-UK), a think-tank exploring the implications of an ageing society.
My research involves synthesising evidence for social policy and developing methods to enhance the use of evidence in decision-making. Methodologically, my interests currently lie in developing methods to assess and enhance the generalisability of systematic review and meta-analyses findings to specific and defined populations, as well as synthesis methods for complex interventions. I am interested in the use and potential of large datasets and diverse data sources, including various forms of real-world data, in informing social and health policy. I am also interested in the development and use of theory to support and communicate research, and particularly through the use of logic models. Substantively I am interested in demography and ageing, and in understanding diversity among older populations. My substantive interests also span a number of public health topics and issues around social exclusion and sexuality. My PhD examined contextual influencers of transitions to early and postponed parenthood.
I lead the undergraduate module on Ageing and Society (SOCS0082) and co-lead the Public Health in Context module (SOCS0033). I also undertake teaching on the Demography and the Life Course and Discovering Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods modules. I am also co-supervising PhD students whose research interests include social isolation and older people, ageing and minority groups, sexuality and the life course, the use of AI in health care, systematic reviews, and evidence use within public health decision-making.
