Biography

Dr Cummings gained his BSc (Honours) in Physiology from UCL in 2000 and then moved to The Open University, where he obtained his PhD studying synaptic transmission in models of Huntington's disease in Dr Kerry Murphy's lab.  His research in the field of Huntington’s disease continued in California, working in Prof Michael Levine's lab at UCLA.  Upon his return to UCL in 2009, he joined Prof Frances Edwards, continuing in the broad field of neurodegeneration but now focusing on Alzheimer's disease.


The central theme of his career, has been cellular mechanisms of learning and memory in healthy ageing and neurodegeneration using multiple in vitro electrophysiological techniques to study neuronal function, complemented by various methods of imaging at microscopic levels and behavioural & cognitive analyses.

Teaching Summary
Dr Cummings is the co-organiser for the 2nd year BSc module PHOL0005: Structure and Function of Nervous Systems and the MSc Neuroscience module ANAT0016: Neurobiology of Degeneration and Repair.  He also teaches on various other modules within the Division of Biosciences.
