Research Summary
General description: the measurement of acoustic and electrical signals created by the ear in response to acoustic stimulation as a by-product of function and their interpretation.
The micro mechanics of sound transduction in the ear is not well understood and yet it is this mechanism which is most easily damaged and most commonly contributes to hearing loss.
Otoprotective and ototheraputic drugs are being developed. A means of measuring very small changes in cochlear function is needed to progress these drugs towards safe use.
