Biography

Prior to coming to UCL  in 2009 I was (in reverse chronological order):
- A PhD student at the University of Melbourne. PhD title: ‘Fitness Landscapes and the Precautionary Principle: The Geometry of Environmental Risk’.
- Working at the CSIRO Division of Building Construction and Engineering.
- Studying Architecture at Deakin University

Research Groups
Research Summary

I am Professor of Energy and the Built Environment at the UCL Energy Institute. My work falls into two related areas: demand side management and occupant thermal comfort in buildings. These areas come together in the field of demand side response from buildings, as implementing this frequently involves reducing power to building's heating and cooling systems thus potentially impacting on occupant thermal comfort. 

On the demand side management side, I am the UK Government’s industry and academic representative to the International Energy Agency's Demand Side Management Technology Collaboration Programme, and in this role I am responsible for multilateral communications between BEIS, UK industry and academia, and the programme.

I am a member of the Strategic Advisory Group of the UK ’Smart Systems and Heat’ programme run by the Energy System Catapult  on behalf of the Energy Technology Institute and its government and industry funders. I have been a consultant and advisor to the UK government and industry on smart metering over the last ten years having done work for BEIS; SEGB; ETI; ESC; EdF; E.ON; SSE; UKPN; Bosch; PassivSystems; and other organisations in the DSM area - as well as sitting on advisory boards for UK and European funded smart energy system projects. I am currently an investigator on around £16M in research grants in the Demand Side Management field.

On the thermal comfort and occupant behaviour in buildings side, I am a member of the ASHRAE Multi-Disciplinary Task Group on Occupant Behaviour in Buildings; the IEA Annex 66 ‘Definition and Simulation of Occupant Behaviour in Buildings’ and IEA Annex 69 ‘Strategy and Practice of Adaptive Thermal Comfort for Lowering Energy use in Buildings’. Through these I am involved in furthering our understanding of how occupant behaviour in buildings is studied, particularly occupants' adaptive thermal comfort responses to their environment, and how this is represented in building models. 
 

I am an editorial board member of Nature Scientific Data, review papers for a dozen international journals, and am a grant reviewer and panel member for EPSRC, ESRC, AHRC, NERC and the Leverhulme Trust. I am currently co-investigator in the RCUK Centre for Energy Epidemiology, academic lead on the Ofgem LCNF Vulnerable Customers and Energy Efficiency project, sit on the Strategic Advisory Group of the ETI Smart Systems Programme, am an academic advisor and consultant to DECC on the Smart Metering programme, and was academic lead on ‘social aspects of smart energy systems’ in the FCO SIN/UKERC Smart Energy Systems academic and trade mission to Japan. 

I have also done consultancy work for the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB); the Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP); the UK Emissions Trading Group (UK-ETG); the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE); and for English Heritage, and was a member of the Carbon Technical Advisory Group for the London 2012 Olympic Games.


Teaching Summary

My current teaching is entirely postgraduate. I supervise PhD students and teach primarily on the UCL Energy Institute MRes programme that forms part of the Institute's Centre for Doctoral Training. I have also done guest lectures on courses at Imperial College and at the University of Reading. My teaching at Masters level focuses around my research interests around measuring measuring and modelling occupant influences on energy use in homes, and more broadly on modelling methods and limitations and on how modelling shapes our understanding of our field. I have supervised six PhD students to successful completion and am currently supervising or co-supervising six students. I have supervised over 50 MSc theses across a range of MSc and MRes programmes. 

I have substantial teaching experience from my time at the University of Reading. There I was the School Director of Postgraduate Studies, and was module convenor on six undergraduate subjects and three MSc modules. At Reading I was nominated for the University's 'Award for Teaching Excellence' and the teaching methods developed for use in one undergraduate module were selected for inclusion in the 'Best Practice in Building Education' programme case studies of innovative teaching practice.
