Biography

I am Associate Professor of Education and Head of Department of Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA) and I am Research Director of the Centre of Climate Change and Sustainability Education and part of the Centre's Leadership Team.

In 2014, I completed an AHRC funded PhD at the University of Nottingham, exploring human-environment interactions in Belize, Central America over a 3,500 year-period. Following this, I qualified as a secondary school geography teacher and taught in schools in Kent, England. After working as Director of Evaluation for the Institute for Research in Schools, I joined King's College London in 2019 as a post-doctoral Research Associate. In 2020, I was appointed Lecturer in Geography Education at King’s College London and Subject Director of the inaugural secondary geography PGCE programme. I joined the Institute of Education in 2022 as MA Education Programme Leader.

In 2020, with Dr Cyrus Nayeri, I co-founded Routes - The Journal for Student Geographers, and I serve as Managing Editor. I am actively connected with geographical professional bodies including the Geographical Association, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS-IBG) and the Geography Education Research Collective/ UK Commission on Geographical Education of the International Geographical Union.

Research Groups
Research Summary

My research expertise is interdisciplinary, drawing on the disciplines of education and geography. This includes the education and professional development of teachers, student participation in research and decision making and, human and environment interactions over time. These areas of expertise intersect with a range of fields including geography and science education, climate change and environmental education, and decolonisation and anti-racism in education. A key quality of my research is to enable and develop meaningful and reciprocal partnerships between scholarship and practice in education and geography. This includes developing pathways, such as co-authorship, so that the knowledge and understanding of teachers and young people can inform education and environmental scholarship and policy making. Recent work has been funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the British Educational Research Association, Leverhulme and the Royal Society of Arts. Consultancy projects include working with the British Council to develop school-based climate change education in Iraq. I serve on the Editorial Boards of The Curriculum Journal and the Journal of Geography in Higher Education and co-convenor of BERA's Education for Environmental Sustainability Special Interest Group.

Teaching Summary
I contribute teaching and tutoring on the MA Education and supervise doctoral research.
