Biography

I'm a research postdoc in Evolutionary Biology at the Center for Biodiversity and Environmental Research in the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment. I work with Seirian Sumner on wasps and other social insects: my research focus is the evolution of social organisation.

I received my bachelor's degree from Oxford Brookes University in Environmental Sciences, my Masters of Research (Biosystematics) from Imperial College London with the Natural History Museum, and my PhD in Bioinformatics from Queen Mary University of London with Yannick Wurm.

Research Summary

My research interests focus in understanding the evolution of social organisation in the social insects: wasps, bees, ants. I aim to address this by exploring genomics and transcriptomics datasets, through field sampling, molecular laboratory manipulations and bioinformatics wrangling.

Teaching Summary

I have been a paid postgraduate demonstrator on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, leading bioinformatics and R tutorials, as well as mentoring undergraduate and master students. I gave lectures on Tropical Ecology and Molecular Tools for ecologists. I gave talks to colleagues during departmental seminars.

I have been co-supervising students with Prof Seirian Sumner:
  • 2019-2020: MSci student Iona Cunningham-Eurich (Population genetics of Vespula vulgaris)
  • 2020: MRes Student Monika Yordanova (Population genetics of Vespula vulgaris)
  • 2020: 1st year Undergraduate Summer project student Jadesada Schneider (Bioinformatics of Vespa crabro)
  • 2020: 3rd year Undergraduate Autumn project student Shin Khan (Correlates of Social organisation, using R)
  • 2021: MRes Winter project student Phoebe Cunningham (Correlates of Social organisation, using R)
