  • Professor of Complex Systems
  • Dept of Civil, Environ &Geomatic Eng
  • Faculty of Engineering Science

I have a chair in Complex Systems in UCL's Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering (CEGE). My area of research is economic (aka linear) infrastructure which provides critical services to people, society and the economy. I direct the Infrastructure Systems Institute which investigates grand challenges on the resilience, sustainable innovation, efficiency, etc. of integrated transport, energy, water, waste and telecommunications systems.

Prior to joining UCL, I was Professor of Complex Infrastructure Systems at Cranfield University, UK where I led a team on the computational modeling of interventions into infrastructure systems, such as water, energy, food nexuses.

My PhD awarded in 2009 is on the evolution of the supply chain in the aerospace manufacturing industry. It investigated the co-evolution of firms in aerospace and the emergence of synergetic characteristics that created waves of industrial transitions.

Research Summary
I led the coordination node of UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastructure and Cities (https://www.ukcric.com/) and I am a co-investigator for the Data and Analytics Facility for National Infrastructure(https://dafni.ac.uk/).  My research interests are on infrastructure: the system of systems of energy, transport, digital communications, water and waste systems. Key research themes are infrastructure resilience, sustainable innovation and circularity, and decarbonisation, using digital twins, hybrid models, and self-healing systems. My expertise is in trans-disciplinary research projects such as AGILE -Aggregators as Digital Intermediaries in Local Electricity markets (PI)(EP/S003088/1), Water Energy Food Nexus: STEPPING UP (Co-I) (EP/N00583X/1),ICEC-MCM: Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centre for Mineral Based Construction Materials (EP/V011820/1), Complex Adaptive Systems, Cognitive Agents and Distributed Energy (CASCADE)(EP/G059969/1), and Centre for Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus (CECAN) (Co-I) (ES/N012550/1).
Teaching Summary

I teach the following modules at UCL which appear on a range of engineering masters' programmes and are offered to third year engineering undergraduates.

CEGE0007 - Digitalisation in Infrastructure Systems (I am also the Module Coordinator)

CEGE0020 - Systems, Society, Sustainability

CEGE0120 - Introduction to Complex Infrastructure Systems (I am also the Module Coordinator)

I also supervise MEng students on their civil engineering project CEGE0017/18 and MSc students on their dissertations CEGE0049.
