Biography

I have a First Class BSc degree with Honours in Psychology and Human Biology (graduated 2009, awarded an Excellence Scholarship). I then went on to study for a PhD in the Psychology department at Oxford Brookes University, which was part funded by the department and the Waterloo Foundation. I was awarded my PhD in 2013, which was entitled 'Children with dyslexia: Spelling as a constraint on writing development'. After completing my PhD, I was employed for 3 years as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Goldsmiths, University of London (2013-2016) on a project funded by The Leverhulme Trust. I joined UCL Institute of Education as a Lecturer in Psychology and Special Educational Needs in January 2017.

I also have a Postgraduate Diploma in Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD; dyslexia) from UCL Institute of Education. I am a recognised specialist literacy teacher and assessor of literacy difficulties (dyslexia) and have Approved Practitioner Status (APS) and an Assessment Practising Certificate (APC). I am an Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA) and hold active AMBDA, as well as being a member of PATOSS and SASC.

Teaching Summary

I currently teach on Masters-level programmes at UCL Institute of Education. My main teaching responsibilities are on the MA in Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD), where I contribute to teaching and marking across all three modules that make up the professional practice qualification. Here the topics that I cover broadly relate to the development of literacy skills and the presentation of literacy difficulties, as well as evidence-based approaches to supporting children with poor literacy. I am also the Module Leader for the SpLD Assessment module, which focuses on psychometrics and writing diagnostic reports and hold 'active AMBDA' for the MA SpLD. In addition, I contribute to modules on other Masters programmes such as Cognitive Development and Learning, and Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD). I teach a literacy session for the Year 2 Doctorate in Educational Psychology programme. I also supervise Masters-level dissertation projects across a range of topics (language, literacy, use of technology to support learning, inclusion).

My previous teaching experience at Oxford Brookes University and Goldsmiths, University of London, has been supporting undergraduate and postgraduate psychology students through delivering lectures and seminars across a range of topics, including: cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, social psychology, atypical development, and research methods. I have also tutored A-level psychology students (2009-2013).

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have previously organised workshops to support Psychology Postgraduates who Teach (PGwT) when I was the South West coordinator for this group supported by the Higher Education Academy.
