Biography

I am a senior lecturer in Information Governance within the Department of Information at University College London.

I am a qualified archivist, curator, and records and information manager with over 20 years’ experience working in both the public and private sectors across a diverse range of organisations including banks, charities, local and national government, museums, private estates and the Royal Household. I maintain my practitioner experience through working on small scale consultancy projects.

From the mid-1990s onwards I have been involved in a number of government led initiatives to review and revise information rights law and compliance standards, including data protection, freedom of information and the information security standard ISO 27000, rolling these out on the ground in workplaces. I am currently working on the implications of implementing the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) into practice.

I am currently a member of the DCMS's Advisory Council on National Records and Archives and also the Forum on Historical Manuscripts and Research. I am a co-editor of the Records Management Journal.

Research Summary

My research interests are; information governance, information rights law, security, risk management, records and information management, archives and heritage management, and research methods in information science. I am interested in the delivery of research linked to practice.  Key projects have included Continued Communication which examined the global management of online communications undertaken as an international multi-disciplinary co-operative inquiry and an AHRC research project investigating the nature of R&D for the worlds of art and culture, as part of the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts, which was a strategic partnership with NESTA and Arts Council England. Currently I am working on an AHRC funded project to create an international research network to look at the challenges of maintaining the digital evidence base through time (https://recorddna.wordpress.com/). In addition,I am part of a project looking at navigating the public information rights ecology which in particular is focusing on care contexts and records. I am also part of the InterPARES Trust and I am working on the development of an Information Governance Maturity Toolkit.

Teaching Summary

I teach on the Archives and Records Management and Library and Information Studies programmes. I am currently responsible for the records and information management module INSTG032 and the LIS managment module INSTG020. In addition I teach an Information Governance module which is available to Masters level students throughout UCL (INSTG079).
