Biography

I graduated from Christ’s College, Cambridge University in 2001 and have worked in clinical neurology and Huntington’s disease (HD) research since 2005. Since 2015 I have been a Clinician Scientist at UCL Institute of Neurology and Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London.

My PhD research on biomarkers and inflammation in HD was undertaken at UCL Institute of Neurology with Prof Sarah Tabrizi, and won the 2009 Queen Square Prize in Neurology.

I have authored 5 book chapters and over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including research papers in PNAS, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Experimental MedicineBrain and Movement Disorders and invited reviews in Neuron and Trends in Experimental Medicine.

I serve on the advisory panel to the UK HD Association, the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Huntington's Disease and PLoS Currents: Huntington's Disease, the Scientific and Bioethical Advisory Committee of the European Huntington's Disease Network (Emeritus) and the Steering Committee of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on Huntington's Disease.

I am passionate about public engagement in scientific research. In 2010 I co-founded HDBuzz, an online source of reliable, easy-to-understand information about HD research, for which I was awarded the 2012 Community Leadership Award from the Huntington Society of Canada.

My personal homepage is edwild.com.

Research Themes
Research Summary

My research focuses on Huntington's disease, a fatal, autosomal dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disease that usually begins in mid-adult life and produces cognitive, behavioural and motor decline.

No cure or disease-slowing treatment exists for HD, but uniquely among prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, Huntington's disease (HD) is fully penetrant and monogenic. This has enabled the development of many promising therapeutic options designed to target known pathogenic pathways in HD.

My research focuses on the study of cerebrospinal fluid for the purpose of understanding the pathobiology of HD and the development of meaningful biomarkers to facilitate and empower clinical trials of new therapeutic agents.

My Clinician Scientist Fellowship is supported by the Medical Research Council. I receive research support from the European Huntington's Disease Network, CHDI Foundation, Wellcome Trust and EU FP7 Project.

Teaching Summary

I lecture on the Institute of Neurology MSc Neuroscience and Dementia courses and the MRes course (I won the ION teaching award in 2014, voted by students) and teach medical students at the bedside. I am an occasional teacher on the ION's MRCP PACES Neurology Course. I frequently teach groups of patients and family members about Huntington's disease research in the UK and overseas.
