Biography
Effie's experience in professionalism in project management and the politics of the self builds on research insights from 11 industries (incl. pharmaceutical, IT, construction, aerospace, commercial, media and creative industries, medicine, engineering, finance, academia and government), and on her industry experience. As a Knowledge Manager for the Audit/Knowledge and Research Service Line at Deloitte LLP in the City of London, she developed first-hand experience on corporate decision-making processes when introducing innovative practices for business growth.
She is Chair of the Knowledge and Learning Special Interest Group and co-founder of the Post-Experience Working Group at the British Academy of Management, founder of the Grand Challenges Programmes Network and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Between 2012 and 2019, Effie led the MSc in Strategic Management of Projects – a UCL executive masters built on the need for strategic/critical thinking and political skill in multi-stakeholder power relations. In 2018, she stepped down from the positions of Assistant Director and Head of Strategic Initiatives at the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction (formerly BSCPM) at UCL, in which she led projects for the strategic development and preparedness of the School for the future. She stepped down from the senior management of the School in April 2022, when her last post was of PG Admissions Tutor (intake of 450 postgraduate students annually). Effie serves as External Examiner for Professional Development/MSc Programmes.
Effie is involved in knowledge transfer/exchange, industry-funded projects, and she is invited as an expert speaker and field expert. Her research has won awards in the British Academy of Management and the University Industry Innovation Network (UIIN). It is published in leading international journals, including a publication in Human Relations, industry reports, plenary sessions and the conferences of the British Academy of Management, the European Academy of Management and the Academy of Management in the USA.

Effie leads an interdisciplinary programme of independent research focused on the politics of the self, in connection with ethics, professionalism and Grand Challenges. Her research studies the individual as an agent (sociological perspective), a human (philosophical perspective) and an employee (organisation studies perspective), where Effie understands the individual (the self) as the unit of antitheses (influenced by Parmenides of Elea, pre-Socratic philosopher 520-450 BCE).
Recent research projects include: a five-sector research project on the ethical dilemmas that senior leaders and professionals face in interdisciplinary, international and intersectional collaborations designed to address Grand Challenges (funded by the APM); a study on how project/programme management practices change projects designed to address Grand Challenges. Effie has identified the Grand Challenges Approach (GCA) that multilateral organisations use to address Grand Challenges, and writes extensively on the politics of the self and ethics in context of Grand Challenges
In parallel to her doctoral studies (PhD awarded with no corrections, University of Stirling, Scotland), Effie worked on the interdisciplinary, £5.5M ESRC/EPSRC Grand Challenges project ‘Immortal Information and Through-Life Knowledge Management (IITKM): Strategies and Tools for the Emerging Product-Service Paradigm’. Effie subsequently helped build the interdisciplinary Centre for Performance at Work at City University London as a research fellow where she was responsible for leading research bids with industrial partners and for impact activities spanning across the academia and industry internationally.
Teaching Summary
Effie's teaching in Executive Education is designed to:
- ensure that professionals are exposed to profound and pioneering ideas and thinking in the field of strategic management of projects
- work with professionals in the class on inspiring ideas through a combination of learning mechanisms
- support professionals challenge existing thinking constructively and develop intelligent and impactful ideas to lead in their industry
- mentor professionals on their professional and academic development with a focus on critical thinking for business, professionalism, people in organisations and qualitative research methods
- ensure that students have the opportunity to develop the relationships that will support their career for many years following graduation.
