  • Professor of Aqueous Geochmistry
  • Dept of Earth Sciences
  • Faculty of Maths & Physical Sciences
UCL Principal Supervisor

Eric was born in New York City before moving to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to peruse an undergraduate degree in Chemistry.  Cured of a life in pure chemistry by a summer internship, he completed undergraduate degrees in Geology and in Chemistry, and then his PhD in Geochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.  After too many years in thesis, Eric moved to Toulouse France, where he spent the better part of two decades as a CNRS scientist and research director focusing  on experimental geochemistry.  He continues an association with the CNRS in Toulouse and as an adjunct professor at the University of Iceland as part of his international research program.

Research Summary

Eric’s research focuses on developing the fundamental geochemical basis for sustainable growth  and managing the Earth.    Some of his current/recent projects include:

  • Carbon capture and storage, focusing on the subsurface mineralization of carbon dioxide – including co-managing the CARBFIX project in Iceland (www.carbfix.com)
  • Quantifying the global cycles of the elements and the feedback between Earth surface weathering and climate.
  • Development and refinement of isotopic tools to quantify past climates and environmental processes.
  • Quantifying the kinetics and thermodynamics of fluid-rock interaction
