Prof Eleanor Stride
Dept. Mech. Eng.
Roberts Building
  • Visiting Professor
  • Dept of Mechanical Engineering
  • Faculty of Engineering Science
Research Summary

Eleanor Stride (ES) is a Reader in Biomedical Enginieering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UCL. Her research interests lie in several complimentary areas, specifically:

-Characterisation and design of microbubble agents for ultrasound imaging and drug delivery
-Advanced encapsulation technologies
-Therapeutic ultrasound
-Ultrasonic characterisation of complex media.

She received her first degree in Mechanical Engineering from UCL with first class honours and completed her PhD in 2005 on microbubble dynamics. She has published over 40 refereed journal papers and delivered over 40 conference papers. She has held 5 EPSRC grants with principal investigator status including a Royal Academy of Engineering Research fellowship, investigating new technologies for the preparation of monodisperse microbubble suspensions, diffusion-controlled microcapsules for drug delivery, and assessing the safety and efficacy of microbubble exposure in diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound in collaboration with researchers at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and University College Hospitals. She is also a co-investigator on grants awarded by the Royal Society, The American Alzheimers Association and the EPSRC including a multi-centre 5 year EPSRC funded project (EP/F025750/1) in collaboration with colleagues at UCL, ICR and the University of Oxford to develop a patient-specific clinical High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) system for cancer therapy;

She currently supervises 3 post-doctoral research fellows and 11 post-graduate students. In addition, she has ongoing collaborations with physicists and clinicians in the Imaging Sciences Department of Hammersmith Hospital, which provides invaluable insight into the challenges faced in clinical practice and with whom she is currently working on advanced techniques for microbubble characterisation. She is a founder member, together with colleagues from Imperial College London and the University of Oxford, of a network for researchers involved in ultrasound-mediated drug delivery. She is a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Physics, where she sits on the Physical Acoustics Group Committee; she is also an Associate Editor of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.

Teaching Summary
Eleanor Stride lectures second-year undergraduates in Dynamics & Control (MECH2006) and Modelling & Analysis II (MECH2007) and MSc students in Medical Imaging.
