Biography

I have been Senior Teaching Fellow in Hungarian at UCL since 2012. I studied Hungarian Literature, Linguistics, and French at Eötvös Loránd Univerisity (ELTE) in Budapest. I completed my BA and MA at ELTE in Literature, Linguistics and Applied Philology with a Certificate of Education in 2004, and my MA at UCL in Central and South-East European Studies in 2005, before joining the School of Slavonic and East European Studies as a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant and Evening Course Tutor (in 2006) and as a Teaching Fellow in Hungarian (in 2007). I am currently Co-ordinator for Postgraduate Language Programmes at SSEES, and Course Leader on UCL's Global Citizenship summer school programme on the Danube: Intercultural Interaction strand.


Apart from my work at UCL/SSEES, I have examined and supervised students in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Westminster, University of East Anglia, and Middlesex University. I have worked as a language adviser and examiner for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Balassi Institute Hungarian Cultural Centre in London. I convened several Public Engagement projects at UCL, including the successful Language Trails: a Journey through the East European Communities of London collaborative web-design project, as well as programmes for the UCL Festival of the Arts.


My main research interests are linguistic and cultural diversity, language contact, language change, the language of literature and verbal art, translation, and attitudes towards language.

Research Summary

My PhD thesis explores the cross-linguistic diversity of attitudes towards language and the social, cultural, and language typological factors that influence discourses of 'standard' language mainly in Hungarian and French, as well as in English, Greek, Romanian, and Czech. I am also interested in language contact and multilingualism, particularly in the Danube region, language endangerment and documentation, Uralic languages (especially Mansi and Khanty), modern philology, translation studies, non-trivial approaches to the intricate relationship between language, culture and identity, as well as the development of language pedagogical materials for Hungarian.


My current projects include the planning of an edited volume on the politics of teaching and learning languages, the English translation of an ethnographic article on Khanty society and culture, and a book chapter on Hungarian in a language typological perspective. I am also working on a paper about the linguistic aspects of political discourse in Hungary, and on an article on the translation of verse.

Teaching Summary

I teach and contribute to a variety of courses at SSEES, including, mainly, Hungarian language and translation to BA students, Hungarian reading courses to research-focused learners on MA courses, and two sociolinguistics courses on language contact in Central and South-East Europe, and on the minority languages of Russia. I have contributed lectures and workshops on Hungarian cinema as well as on language and migration to UCL's Widening Participation Sutton Scholars programme.


Apart from my work at SSEES, I have taught language classes and supervised students of Hungarian--English translation at the University of Westminster, University of East Anglia, and Middlesex University. I have designed exams and acted as an examiner for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages (ECL). I have contributed to designing course syllabi for Hungarian at the European Commission through Communicaid.


I have a keen interest in teaching and learning, as well as in the broad and complex question what 'knowledge' is. I have been a regular contributor to CEELBAS language pedagogical workshops, the UCL Teaching and Learning Conference, and UCL Arena training events. I have published papers on learning styles in, and linguistic approaches to, language pedagogy. I have developed Hungarian language pedagogical materials for the CEELBAS Language Repository and the Language Box open access collection of teaching resources.
