Research Summary

Key interests:

Neuroimaging methods (fMRI and EEG); vision perception; binocular vision; amblyopia; stereo vision; camouflage; evolutionary psychology; teaching and scholarship in Higher Education


Summary: 

My main research interests have been in understanding the human visual system, particularly how the brain integrates information from each of our eyes. One of the ways this can be understood is by exploring what happens when this system breaks down, such as in disorders like amblyopia (lazy eye). I am interested in using different neuroimaging techniques (such as EEG and fMRI) and computational models to explore visual processing. I am also interested in how modern technology (e.g. 3D gaming) can be used to develop new and more effective forms of treatment for people suffering with visual disorders. 

 

Understanding camouflage and how it can be ‘broken’ to reveal a target is another interest of mine. Investigating how camouflage works involves many key mechanisms of visual perceptions (e.g. motion processing, target-background segmentation, feature binding). Understanding these processes has many applications across a number of different disciplines, including surveillance, security, armed conflict, medical imaging and machine vision.
