Biography

I hold a BEd (Honours) degree (University of Patras, Greece), an MSc in Applied Linguistics and a PhD in Linguistics and Bilingualism from the University of Edinburgh. As a qualified teacher, I have taught Modern Greek as an L1/L2 in schools in the UK and Greece. After completing my PhD in bilingual language acquisition and crosslinguistic influence, I worked as a Postdoctoral researcher in projects on cognitive effects of bilingualism in adults, on age effects in bilingual and L2 acquisition and on bilingual acquisition and bilingual education  (University of Edinburgh & Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), as a Lecturer in Linguistics (Hellenic American University, Athens), as a Lecturer in Bilingualism on the E-learning teacher training course for the teaching of Modern Greek as an L2.  I then taught Language learning and topics in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at Birkbeck College (University of London) and Language development and Linguistics at the UCL department of Linguistics. I joined the Centre for Applied Linguistics at the UCL Institute of Education in 2017 as a Lecturer (Teaching).

Research Summary

My research focuses on the language and reading development of school-age bilingual children in both the societal and the non-societal language (simultaneous/successive bilinguals/child L2 learners & children with English as an additional language), on the role of age of onset, amount/quality of input and crosslinguistic influence in language learning, and on cognitive and brain effects of childhood bilingualism. 


More specifically, my current research adopts an interdisciplinary approach and investigates early childhood bilingualism effects on language, cognition and the brain (behavioural tasks, parental questionnaire, vocabulary assessment, fMRI) and biliteracy effects on executive function in bilingual school-age children (online behavioural tasks, parental questionnaire, vocabulary & reading assessment).


My research has appeared in international peer-reviewed journals such as Second Language Research, Bilingualism: Language & Cognition, Applied Psycholinguistics, F1000 Research, Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism


I am currently Convenor of the Multilingualism Special Interest Group of the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL).


I am also co-founder and director of UCL BiLingo, a bilingualism/multilingualism information and education service. One of our key aims is to bridge the gap between researchers and the wider community by disseminating recent research findings on growing up with two or more languages in childhood. 

Teaching Summary

I have taught theoretical and applied linguistics topics in modules both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, i.e., introductory modules on Linguistics and Language learning, modules on bilingualism & multilingualism, English language and linguistics, first and second language acquisition. I am currently leading and teaching the MA modules on Bilingualism & Multilingualism ( MA Applied Linguistics, MA TESOL in-service & MA Intercultural Communication programmes) and on Second Language Acquisition (MA TESOL pre-service programme). I also contribute to the Dissertation module (research methodology). I supervise MA dissertations on topics related to bilingualism/multilingualism and second language acquisition and teaching.
