I previously worked as a registered nurse in elderly care and palliativecare settings. I undertook a BA(Hons) (Social Policy andAdministration) and MSc (Public Policy) at the University of York. My firstresearch role was at King's College London in the Department of Palliative andSupportive Care (now named Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy& Rehabilitation) developing outcome measurement scales (POS, VOICES) foruse in different care settings.
I then returned to the University of York and completed an ESRC-funded PhD inPolitics/Health Sciences on a policy-focused study on public and patientinvolvement in NHS decision-making. Following PhD studies, I undertook researchin the Social Policy Research Unit, University of York, where using qualitativeand mixed-methods approaches, I worked on/led several complex evaluationsof systems, services and interventions across health and social care settings,including community neurological services, support for carersof people with dementia, and reablement.
I am currently based in the Department of Applied Health Research for the NIHRARC North Thames as 'Senior Research Associate in Qualitative Methods Applied toOrganisational Research in Health' where, as part of the ARC North Thames'Research Partnership Team, I help facilitate and support health and social careresearch with local, regional and national relevance. I am also the social careresearch lead for NIHR LCRN North Thames.
As a social scientist, I use qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to undertake complex evaluations of systems, services and interventions across health and social care settings.
I have research interests in
- Qualitative research and evaluation of complex health and social care interventions and organisations
- The experience and outcomes of integrated care policy and practice for staff, service users and informal carers.
- Social and community health care for adults, including people with dementia
- Social care research infrastructure/skills
When based at the University of York, I taught Politicsundergraduate and post-graduate students including research methods, democraticthought and practice and general politics modules, and supervised PhD studentsin Social Policy.
At UCL, I teach on research methods and social science courses andmodules (e.g. BSc Population Health, MBBS BSc) and MSc Population Healthmodules and supervise undergraduate and post-graduate students.
I also supports several of the training courses provided as part of theNIHR ARC North Thames Academy.
