- Professor of Medical Education and Palliative Medicine
- UCL Medical School
- Faculty of Medical Sciences
I studied Medicine at St George's Hospital Medical School, graduating with a BSc and MBBS with University of London Distinction. I gained MRCP in 2000 and FRCP in 2014. I gained my Certificate of Completion of (Specialist) Training as a consultant in palliative medicine in 2008.
My honorary consultant contract is held at the Royal Free Hospital/Marie Curie. My specialist practice is mainly in cancer survivorship and palliative care outpatients.
I began my academic career as a Professional Development Spine (now Clinical & Professional Practice) tutor at UCL Medical school in 2007. I have held various leadership roles: initially as deputy and then as academic lead for the Vertical Modules. In 2019, I was appointed as the Associate Head of the MBBS Programme at UCL.
In April 2021, I took up my current position as interim Director of UCL Medical School and Head of the MBBS Programme. I became Professor of Medical Education and Palliative Medicine in 2021.
I am one of 500 global Principal Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.
As well as being a doctor of medicine, I am also a Doctor of Education, having completed my doctoral studies at the Institute of Education, UCL. My research was in curriculum mapping.

My research portfolio spans clinical and educational domains.
I have collaborated with groups including the Francis Crick Institute (FCI) as part of the PEACE Consortium (understanding tumour heterogeneity). Clinical trials in my multidisciplinary cancer survivorship practice have provided new knowledge in improving outcomes for patients with advanced disease through regular exercise and multi-disciplinary post-treatment rehabilitation.
In the educational sphere, I won a UCL Provost Award (2020), a UCL Faculty Award and a UCL Excellence in Medical Education Award (EMEA) for work translated from my doctoral research on curriculum mapping, which used innovative methodologies.
My research on student Schwartz Rounds has informed national practice. The contribution of SRs to enhancing medical student reflection was recognised with another UCL Provost Education Award, and has shaped training of nurses, dentists and vets through incorporation into cross-disciplinary curricula. I was shortlisted (final four) for the international Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Excellence in Patient Care Awards 2019 for my research on the impact of SRs on undergraduate learner well-being.
I organised three national symposia on medical student resilience, attended by 28 of 41 UK medical schools (2017-19). Collaborative opportunities in curriculum and research resulted with exploration of challenging areas including burnout and suicide in medical students.
I have reviewed papers for several international journals including the BMJ, Palliative Medicine and BMC Medical Education.
I nurture the development of early career researchers including medical students and clinical teaching fellows. I supervise postgraduate students. I contributed to the preparation and portfolio of academic work submitted to REF 2021 UoA 25 (education).
As Head of UCL Medical School’s MBBS programme I lead on teaching and learning strategy, with direct responsibility for 2000 future doctors. Being a practising clinician helps me to situate patients at the heart of my practice.
I led the MBBS Curriculum Map (CM) project, making UCLMS one of a few schools to have an electronic CM. This has directly impacted on the student experience, as evidenced by improved National Student Survey (NSS) data in assessment.
As programme lead for Professionalism (2015-21), I used innovative pedagogies in areas including digital professionalism, and resilience.
I have researched fields including diversifying and decolonising medical education. My Inaugural Provost Team Award for Embedding Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (2020) resulted from scholarship around inclusive medical education.
I have co-created cutting-edge modules on Sustainability & Climate Change in Healthcare: Doctor as Data Scientist: Patient Safety & Patient Experience.
As Faculty delegate for UCL's Leading Change in Education programme, I participated in knowledge exchange with cross-disciplinary educators institutionally and internationally.
I have undertaken external HEI curricular reviews: St George’s University of London (SGUL) MBBS Periodic Review (2019). As external examiner SGUL and Thomas Jefferson University (USA), my recommendations have led to programme improvements.
