Dr Freya Johnson Ross
Tel: 020 3073 8344
  • Research Associate
  • IOE - Education, Practice & Society
  • UCL Institute of Education

Drawing on her experience in NGOs, social research and academia, Freya’s research interests are focused around gender and equalities, young people, policy and social change in a range of contexts, and more specifically:

  • The production and translation of ideas about gender into legislation, policy and practice, and the different organisational and individual actors that enact this.
  • Feminist and other actors’ engagements striving for social change, both inside and outside traditional delineations of social movements.
  • Young people, sexualities and violence in educational settings, and modes of addressing this.
  • Qualitative methods, including a range of approaches to interviewing and group work, participatory, and historical approaches including archive-based and oral history.

From 2015-18 she worked on the collaborative End Gender Violence in Schools initiative with UNICEF (which sought to strengthen evidence creation and use in policy and practice addressing school-related gender-based violence in Sub-Saharan Africa). She is currently working on projects looking at the significance of non-state gender equality actors in shaping national policy and practice on gender and education in Uganda and Zambia, and gender activism in higher education in Chile.

She coordinates the Gender, Education and Development MA module (Spring), and is interested in supervising PhD students whose work engages with dimensions of policy and activism linked to gender and education.
