Many infectious diseases require a combination of drugs to ensure complete pathogen clearance from the body. The major research focus is to give recommendations about the combination of drugs, the amount of drugs and length of treatment that should be offered to patients.
The concentration – effect relationship forms the base for the dose regimen and nonlinear mixed-effects models are used to parameterise these pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic relationships. These pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic models are subsequently used to select the most effective dosing regimen using computer simulations. Moreover, they are also used for the optimisation of prospective experimental protocols and clinical trial designs in combination with optimal design theory.
