Biography

Dr Lesniewska joined the Institute for Sustainable Resources and UCL Laws in July 2021 as a Research Fellow for the UKRI Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centre forMineral-based Construction Materials focusing on how law, policy, regulation, and standards can be used to achieve a circular economy within the cement and concrete sectors. Between March 2018-December 2019 Dr Lesniewska was a Research Fellow at UCL STEaPP for the UKRI PETRAS programme focusing on the governance of the Internet of Things and critical infrastructure security. Dr Lesniewska has also extensive experience as a lecturer. Before joining UCL as a lecturer Dr Lesniewska taught Climate Change Law, Global Energy and Climate Policy, Law and Natural Resources, International Environmental Law, and Risk and Policy Analysis while at SOAS University of London.

Research Summary

Dr Lesniewska is an interdisciplinary scholar who draws on law, political ecology, and economics to understand the implications of interventions to address planetary ecological crises. In her research Dr Lesniewska has undertaken field work in Central and West Africa, China, and Russia, as well as Europe and internationally. Her research has primarily focused on law and forests relating to climate change,ecosystems law, human and indigenous peoples’ rights. More recently Dr Lesniewska has focused her research to identify interconnections between digital technology, law and policy, and the environment. Currently Dr Lesniewska is researching how law, policy, regulation, and standards can be used to transition to a circular economy in the UK specifically for mineral based construction materials.

Dr Lesniewska teaches on the MSc in Economics and Policy of Energy and the Environment (EPEE) at the Institute for Sustainable Resources
