Biography
Felicity Smith BPharm, MA, PhD FRPharmS, is a registered
pharmacist with experience of hospital and community pharmacy. After completing
an MA in African Studies at SOAS and her PhD evaluating the contribution of
community pharmacists to primary care, at St Bartholomew’s Medical College in
London, she joined the academic staff at the School of Pharmacy, and is currently
Professor of Pharmacy Practice.
Felicity Smith has over 25 years’ experience in research
into the use of medicines and pharmacy services in the UK and internationally. In
1998 she was awarded the first British Pharmaceutical Conference Practice Research
Award. She is a Fellow of or the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
Publications include over 70 peer-reviewed research papers, and many other articles and conference communications. She has authored major texts on the application of health services research methodology to studies of medicines use and pharmacy services.
Research Summary
Felicity Smith is active in research into the use of medicines, especially in community settings. Particular current interests include:
· the use of medicines by patients/ consumers in the context of their daily lives and home settings
· the use of existing therapies and newer technologies across the interface of hospital, primary care and in the home
· partnerships between patients and (informal) carers in medicines-management and related responsibilities, to enable appropriate support
· the place of pharmacists and the potential role of pharmacy services in achieving public heatlh goals in the context of pharmaceutical care needs and system factors
· the development and evaluation of pharmacy services, including a number of collaborations with low income countries and settings.
Teaching Summary
Throughout her career Professor Smith has remained active in the teaching and supervision of pharmacy students at all stages of undergraduate and post-graduate study. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
