Research Summary

People who have Down Syndrome (DS) are at much greater risk of developing early onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD) than the general population. Understanding why this occurs could reveal new therapeutic targets for AD treatment.  DS is caused by an extra copy of human chromosome 21, which encodes ~230 genes.  One of these genes (APP) is a key AD precursor protein. How the extra copy of genes on chromosome 21 affect disease is not yet understood.  My work aims to understand how genes on chromosome 21 modify disease, with the goal of developing novel treatments for dementia.
