Biography
Prof Gerhardt Attard MD PhD FRCP
Prof Attard is a John Black Charitable Foundation Endowed Chair in Urological Cancer Research at University College London. He holds an advanced Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist award and is Team Leader of the Treatment Resistance Group at the UCL Cancer Institute. He graduated with a degree in Medicine from the University of Malta in June 1999 and obtained a PhD in Medicine from the University of London (ICR) in 2010. His main research interest is dissecting treatment resistance, currently with a focus on plasma DNA analysis, in order to inform on the development of novel therapeutics and biomarkers for castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). He is an experienced clinical trialist in CRPC and a co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including several important papers on advanced prostate cancer. Prof Attard’s many awards over the years include the ASCO Foundation Annual Merit Award in 2007, Prostate Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award in 2008, the AACR-GlaxoSmithKline Outstanding Clinical Scholar Award in 2009, the Medical Research Society/Academy of Medical Sciences Sue McCarthy Prize in 2010 and the McElwain award in 2010. He received the Cancer Research UK Future Leader Award in 2017.  Prof Attard sits on a number of advisory boards and the editorial board of Annals of Oncology.
Research Summary
I am a Cancer Research UK clinician scientist and honorary medical oncology consultant with 15 years research experience in drug and biomarker development for castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). I am internationally recognised, having published extensively, been widely cited and presented and chaired sessions at major international meetings. I sit on several scientific advisory boards and grant review committees and review manuscripts for the major journals. I lead the Treatment Resistance group in the University College London (UCL) Cancer Institute focusing on functional and genomic studies of mechanisms of resistance in prostate cancer and the development of circulating biomarker based strategies for patient molecular characterisation and stratification. My clinical practice based in the University College London Hospital (UCLH) manages men with CRPC, the majority of whom are treated in the setting of clinical trials. I have led as chief investigator several multi-centre national and international clinical trials in CRPC. I lead the PCF-SELECT consortium to clinically implement a plasma-based test in the management of prostate cancer, the STRATOSPHere consortium to develop rational treatments for molecularly stratified prostate cancer starting long-term hormone therapy and the abiraterone-enzalutamide comparison in the STAMPEDE trial. I provide mentorship for medical oncology fellows and trainees and laboratory-based PhD students and post-doctoral fellows.
