Dr Geraldine Barrett is a social scientist who has worked in public health/health services research since the early 1990s. Dr Barrett’s first degree was in Sociology and Social Policy in 1991, followed by a post as a research officer in Department of Public Health at Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster Health Authority and a Masters degree in Medical Sociology. She then moved to the Department of Public Health Sciences at St George’s Hospital Medical School, and then onto the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine with an MRC special training fellowship in health services research in 1998. She completed her PhD in public health in 2002 which, in developing the “London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy”, combined her interests in women’s reproductive health, social science and methodological research. She moved to Brunel University as a lecturer in 2003, becoming a senior lecturer in 2006. She joined UCL Institute for Women’s Health in January 2017.

Dr Barrett has a long-standing research interest in women’s sexual and reproductive health, including unplanned pregnancy, contraception, and pre-pregnancy health and care. Her other research interest is research methodology, particularly psychometric measure development and evaluation. She developed the London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP), a measure of pregnancy intention/planning, which is now used internationally. She is responsible for the LMUP webpage/handbook (www.lmup.org.uk) and is involved in ongoing methodological research with the LMUP. She advises and collaborates on evaluations of the LMUP in new languages and populations around the world.
Dr Barrett's teaching focus is research methods in health and health services. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
