Biography

Gemma-Louise is a Lecturer in Materials Chemistry and Director of the MSc in Materials for Energy and the Environment in the Department of Chemistry at UCL. She is also an Associate Editor of the Journal of Materials Chemistry B.

Gemma-Louise gained a BA Mod Chem from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland in 2006. She remained in TCD to study for her PhD in the School of Chemistry and CRANN Institute under the supervision of Prof Yurii Gun’ko. She completed her PhD, entitled “Development of New Silica and Magnetic-Luminescent Silica Nanostructured Materials” in 2011, during which she developed a passion for studying the engineering of nanomaterials for biomedical applications and cultivated collaborations with scientists from around the world. Gemma-Louise carried out a brief Industry-supported Post-Doc in TCD before moving to the University of Oxford to carry out a Post-Doc with Prof. Jason Davis for 2 years, where she worked on an interdisciplinary project, with numerous collaborations spanning Chemistry, Physiology, Orthopaedics and Molecular Medicine. In 2013, she joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Warwick as a Senior Research Fellow supported by an Institute of Advanced Study Global Research Fellowship, where she began her independent research career. She joined UCL Chemistry in July 2017.

Gemma-Louise is currently a committee member of the SCI-RSC Joint Colloids and Interfaces group and the Materials Chemistry Division Council of the RSC. She is also a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Materials Research Society, the American Chemical Society and the British Society for Nanomedicine. She is also a member of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) group and the Warwick Medical Imaging Network.

Research Summary

Our research aims to develop nanomaterials to solve important challenges in medicine and healthcare, focusing on the design and development of novel nanomaterials as functional MRI contrast agents and targeted drug delivery devices. We develop new and innovative techniques to prepare nanostructures, combining traditional synthetic approaches (such as precipitation, organometallic and solvothermal syntheses) with innovative magnetically and thermally-driven techniques to produce unusual nanostructures and nanocomposites with enhanced properties. The work is highly interdisciplinary, working with collaborators across Chemistry, Engineering, Pharmacy, Life Sciences and the Medical School. Members of the group have the opportunity to carry out all stages of research – from synthetic design, preparation and analytical characterisation to application and device testing.

Teaching Summary

Gemma-Louise is the module leader and lecturer on CHEM0067 "Advanced Topics in Energy and Environmental Science".
