Biography
After spending one year at the DKFZ in Heidelberg during my MSc (funded by an Erasmus scholarship), I came to London to join the centre for microvascular research at QMUL led by professor Sussan Nourshargh where I obtained my PhD in 2016. Here, under the supervision of Dr James Whiteford, I studied the roles and effects of the syndecan family of heparan-sulphate proteoglycans on angiogenesis and endothelial cell biology. In 2019, I joined the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology driven by a growing interest in retinal vascular diseases.

Research Summary
My current project in the lab of Professors Steve Moss and John Greenwood aims to pin down the role of the protein LRG1 (standing for leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein 1) in the early steps of diabetic retinopathy (DR). DR is a complication of diabetes and a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness in the working age population. Current treatments for DR are only effective in half of the patients, meaning that new targets are desperately needed.
