Ghalia Kayal holds a BS in PublicHealth from the University of King Saud and MSc in Global Health and Policiesfrom Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). Before commencing this PhD, sheworked at Princess Nora University (PNU) as a teacher assistant in Health andrehabilitation College. PNU, located in Riyadh the capital of Saudi Arabia,funds her PhD.

Research Summary

Ghalia’s PhD aims to understand better the importance of measuring patient-reported experienceof bowel cancer screening and developing and evaluating new patient-reportedexperience measures.

The PhD project will feature theresults of a systematic review to examine patient experience for those with anabnormal primary colorectal cancer test who require further investigation.These findings and a workshop with Patient representatives were then used todevelop a new version of the Patient-Reported Experience Measure for the EnglishBCSP. In addition, it also involves a study of patient-reported experiences andanxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic at a local screening centre. Finally, a futurestudy will test the accessibility and acceptability of an online patient-reported experience measure.

Ghalia is supervised by DrChristian von Wagner (Primary supervisor), Dr Yasemin Hirst (secondarysupervisor) and Dr Robert Kerrison (University of Surrey).

Teaching Summary
Ghalia worked as a journal club facilitator for the Behavioral Science MSc program.
