Greg James undertook his medical studies at Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’ School of Medicine, London, during which he intercalated two further degrees: a BSc (first class honours) in Physiology and a PhD in Neuroscience. During this time, he published and presented nationally and internationally in the fields of cellular neurophysiology and neural injury, and was awarded a travelling fellowship to undertake further research in the Department of Neurology, University of Washington, USA. He then completed Basic Surgical Training on the South Thames rotation, during which he gained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, followed by Neurosurgical Specialist Training in North Thames. He spent one year as Paediatric Neurosurgery Fellow at Great Ormond Street Hospital, as well as registrar posts at GOSH, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Royal London, Royal Free and Charing Cross hospitals. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2013 and was awarded his CCT in Neurosurgery the following year.  He was appointed as Consultant Neurosurgeon at GOSH in 2014 and Associate Professor at UCL in 2015

Research Themes
Research Summary

I am an academic paediatric neurosurgeon, with clinical and research interests in cerebrovascular disease, craniosynostosis and hydrocephalus.

In 2019 I was awarded a MRC Clinical Academic Research Partnership Grant. I am using this to undertake research under the supervision of Professor David Atwell, UCL NPP (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/biosciences/departments/neuroscience-physiology-and-pharmacology/people/professor-david-attwell), into the cellular neurophysiology of ischaemia and reperfusion in the developing brain. This complements my clinical interest in paediatric stroke, moyamoya, and brain injury.

I am also an active member of the FaceValue Craniofacial research group (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/child-health/research/developmental-biology-and-cancer-programme/stem-cells-and-regenerative-medicine-0) at the GOS Institute of Child Health, where I have research interests in minimally invasive craniosynostosis surgery and intracranial pressure.

I am a Co-PI for ENLIVEN, a randomised controlled study into the use of ventricular lavage for pre-term intraventricular haemorrhage. I was awarded a RCS Pump-Priming grant for this work.
