I lead UCL's Epidemiology of Cancer Healthcare and Outcomes (ECHO) Group http://www.ucl.ac.uk/iehc/research/behavioural-science-health/research/epidemiology-cancer-healthcare-outcomes. I joined UCL in 2015, at the start of my Cancer Research UK Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellowship.

From October 2015 I also work as Senior Cancer Epidemiologist for the Nationcal Cancer Registration and Analysis Services (NCRAS) of Public Health England.

During 2012-2014, I was NIHR Post-Doctoral Fellow in the University of Cambridge. During 2006-11 I worked as part-time consultant clinical adviser for the Interventional Procedures Programme of NICE (National Institute for Health and Social Care Excellence).  During 2004-7 I worked as consultant in public health in the East of England NHS. During 1999-2004 I trained in public health medicine in the North West Deanery and the University of Manchester (2002-4). During the 1990s I trained in general internal medicine in NHS hospitals in North West England.

Empirical or conceptual work that I have led/co-led is cited in the current National Cancer Strategy for England 2015-2020 (Achieving World-Class Cancer Outcomes; the U.S. Institute of Medicine Report "Improving Dianosis in Health Care" (2015); the Lancet Oncology Commission "The Expanding Role of Primary Care in Cancer Control" (2015);  the narrative review of the WHO working party on the Global Burden of Diagnostic Errors in Primary Care (2016) and the 'State of the Nation' CRUK report on Cancer in the UK (2018).

In 2016 I was awarded the Cancer Research UK Future Leader Prize, a prestigious award that recognises individuals who have demonstrated world-leading potential within their first ten post-doctoral years, being the first epidemiologist to be given the Prize.

Research Summary

I am a cancer healthcare epidemiologist and population health scientist.

My research chiefly focuses on examining variation in diagnostic pathways, test strategies and diagnostic intervals in patients subsequently diagnosed with cancer, to help understand responsible psychosocial and healthcare factors and target improvement efforts. I also study disparities in cancer management and outcomes, including cancer patient experience. PubMed listed research outputs can be seen here https://bit.ly/2DscwUo .
