I work as Professor of Cancer Epidemiology at UCL, specialising on cancer healthcare and early diagnosis research, I lead the Epidemiology of Cancer Healthcare and Outcomes (ECHO) Group at University College London.Complete PubMed list of published work: http://tinyurl.com/lncqq7f




During 2012-2014, I was NIHR Post-Doctoral Fellow in the University of Cambridge. During 2006-11 I worked as part-time consultant clinical adviser for the Interventional Procedures Programme of NICE (National Institute for Health and Social Care Excellence). During 2004-7 I worked as consultant in public health in the East of England NHS. During 1999-2004 I trained in public health medicine in the North West Deanery and the University of Manchester (2002-4). During the 1990s I trained in general internal medicine in NHS hospitals in North West England.
Empirical or conceptual work that I have led is cited in the current National Cancer Strategy for England 2015-2020 (Achieving World-Class Cancer Outcomes); the U.S. Institute of Medicine Report "Improving Diagnosis in Health Care" (2015); the Lancet Oncology Commission "The Expanding Role of Primary Care in Cancer Control" (2015); the narrative review of the WHO working party on the Global Burden of Diagnostic Errors in Primary Care (2016), the WHO report on 'Cancer: Setting Priorities, Investing Wisely, and Providing Care for All", the 'State of the Nation' report on Cancer in the UK (2018), the Cancer Research UK Early Detection and Diagnosis of Cancer Roadmap (2020) and the cancer disparities report ‘Cancer in the UK 2020: Socio-economic deprivation’ (2020).
In 2016 I was awarded the Cancer Research UK Future Leader Prize, a prestigious award that recognises individuals who have demonstrated world-leading potential within their first ten post-doctoral years, being the first epidemiologist to be given the Prize.
To November 2019 there have been 89 published joint papers first-authored by junior colleagues and collaborators.
- 45 published joint papers first- or last-authored by 10 statistical colleagues and collaborators (36/45 with me as a last author, and 9/45 otherwise enabled critically by me).
- 44 published joint papers first-authored by 26 junior to me colleagues who were either PhD, Masters or undergraduate course students; or medical specialty trainees (including from general practice, public health or general surgery rotations); or other short-term or project secondees (27/44 with me as the last author, 17/44 otherwise enabled critically by me).
