Biography

Gabriele Manoli received a BSc degree in 2007 (University of Padova, Italy), a double MSc degree in 2009 (University of Padova and Technical University of Denmark) and a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering Sciences in 2013 (University of Padova). From 2014 to 2016, he was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University (USA) and, from 2016 to 2019, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Environmental Engineering at ETH Zurich (Switzerland). In 2017 he was awarded a Branco Weiss Fellowship to carry out research at the interface between ecology, hydrology, complex system science, and sustainable urban design. In 2019 he joined UCL where he now leads the Urban Ecohydrology Laboratory. Since 2020, he is also a member of UCL Urban Lab steering committee.

Research Summary

Gabriele Manoli's research focuses on the complex mechanisms regulating water, carbon and energy exchanges at the land surface considering both natural and urban ecosystems. Specific research areas include soil-plant processes, land-atmosphere interactions, coupled human-natural dynamics, and sustainable urban design (with particular attention to urban green spaces, climate, and health). Given the complexity of such problems, his research crosses the boundaries between multiple disciplines, from hydrology, to ecology, soil physics, non-linear dynamics and complex system science.
