Biography

After her Bachelor and Master degree in Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and a period in St Jude Medical as Field Technical Engineer in Cardiac Rhythm Management department, Giorgia joined the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science & Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, UK for her PhD programme.

She then moved to UCL Mechanical Engineering as a postdoctoral research associate after obtaining the British Heart Foundation Immediate Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.

Giorgia now holds the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship for her project titled "Engineered Patients Stratification and Therapeutic planning: Application to Atrial Fibrillation".

Research Themes
Research Summary

Giorgia’s research focuses on the translation of computational techniques in clinical practice, as she strongly believes that computational simulations based on medical images have the potential to aid clinical decision-making for the optimal patients’ treatment.

Specifically, she works on the development and validation of patient-specific numerical models for cardiovascular devices implantation, and in particular minimally-invasive technique for patients who cannot undergo open-heart surgery, such as percutaneous heart valves and occluder devices.

Her main research project aims at developing engineering models to elucidate the conditions of blood flow and thrombus formation in a region of the heart named “left atrial appendage”, where blood clots typically form when the heart rhythm is disturbed by a condition called atrial fibrillation. In particular, the goal of the project is understanding the relationship between LAA shape, blood flow phenomena and clot formation by means of computational and experimental techniques.
