Biography
Current Position:
I am Joint Director Priment Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), and UCL Co-Lead for the NIHR Research Design Service. Priment CTU is a cross faculty collaboration and runs trials in a range of mental health, primary care and community settings (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/priment). I am Professor in Primary Care at PCPH, which is a member of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research. In addition I am a research theme lead and Academy Lead for the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Blood Borne and Sexually Transmitted Infections at UCL. I maintain my clinical role as a general practitioner in London and previously was a clinical lead within Islington CCG.
Background
I trained in Manchester, where I completed my clinical general practice training there. I gained a MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. My MD was a project on screening for mental health disorders in older people from ethnic minority backgrounds. I spent some time working with the MRC General Practice Research Framework. I became Deputy Director of PRIMENT Clinical Trials Unit in 2011.

Research Summary
I am a methodological expert in designing and delivering on primary care trials of complex interventions and am Joint Director Priment Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). In addition I have an epidemiological portfolio, working with electronic health records, in particular primary care data.
Within this methodological expertise, my subject expertise covers two key areas: dementia and infections. Current dementia research includes examining dementia risk, diagnostic and post-diagnostic support (PRIDEM; Funder: Alzheimer Society)
Research supervision
I have 6 PhD students, with 10 completions to date. I supervise students in areas of primary care and community research. I also mentor post doctoral fellows.
Teaching Summary
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. I supervise ECRs and staff to develop new modules and deliver short courses. I oversee the delivery of education in clinical trials and research methods at PRIMENT CTU. I have developed teaching materials on research methods, particularly systematic reviews and trials.
I supervised an international educational research PhD (general practice and medical education) based in Brazil and the UK.
