Research Summary

My main research interest is in the nonlinear mechanics of slender elastic structures undergoing large deformations, both 1D (rods, strings) and 2D (strips, ribbons) and with a focus on discovering and understanding new phenomena. Aspects I'm interested in are: buckling and post-buckling behaviour, statical and dynamical stability, localisation, bifurcation, spatial chaos, constrained deformation (self-contact and surface contact), discontinuities (kinks), whirling, transport, multi-strand structures, boundary layers, topological properties such as link and writhe.

I am looking at these aspects in both engineering (marine pipelines, twisted cables, (electrodynamic) space tethers, drill strings, wire rope, rotated and transported textile yarn, nanotube junctions) and biology (supercoiled DNA, cholesterol ribbons, collagen fibres).

My main techniques are: (constrained) calculus of variations, numerical solution of boundary-value problems for ODEs, numerical continuation and bifurcation methods, singular perturbation theory.
