I grewup in Wokingham and carried out my undergraduate studies in Chemistry at theUniversity of Birmingham. I graduated in 1997 and pursued an MRes at theUniversity of East Anglia (UEA) under Dr Alan Haines looking at carbohydratechemistry. I undertook my PhD research (1998-2002) at the University of Bristolwith Prof Kevin Booker-Milburn, investigating photochemical reaction and theirapplication towards natural product synthesis. In 2002 I moved to Sussexto carry out postdoctoral research with Prof Steve Caddick, exploring syntheticmethodologies to construct enediyne antitumor antibiotics and we transferred tocontinue the work at UCL. In 2004 I started work at GSK Dartford in a TechnicalDevelopment Process Chemistry role and was swiftly recruited into a Continuous ImprovementProject Leader role supervising cGMP pharmaceutical manufacture on the >100kgscale primarily on Telzir (Fosamprenavir Calcium. In 2007 I moved withinGSK to the Chemical Development facility in Tonbridge working in a SeniorScientist process development role applying automation and Design of Experiment(Doe) techniques to process optimisation. In 2010, I relocated to Sigma-Aldrich(now Merck) to work as a Shift Chemist and was swiftly promoted to a ProductionShift Leader role overseeing contract manufacture at the 1-10kg scale. In 2013I started work at BTG-Biocompatibles investigating imageable resins and hydrogelsas embolic agents. In 2020 I returned to UCL as a Lab Manager and Senior ResearchFellow under Prof Alethea Tabor where I have remained ever since.
Carbohydrates, Natural Product (Alkaloid) Synthesis, Photochemistry, Manufacturing Chemistry (The Business of Chemistry), Process Chemistry and Scale Up, Design of Experiment (DoE) and Automation,
Hydrogels & Tumor Imaging and Biomedical Devices.
I am currently working on projects investigating the synthesis of peptide-dye bioconjugates as cancer imaging agents
I have taught practical and theoretical organic chemistry toundergraduates, postgraduates and industry colleagues throughout my career.Recently, I have taken 4 sets of undergraduates in tutorials and I have designed/supervised the researchprojects of 7 masters students. Of these, 4 received 1st class ratings on theirresearch and of 3 of them got to the end of their proposed project synthesesenabled by my teaching. At both GSK and BTG I was responsible for training allnew starters to my labs. In 2021 I was asked along with a teaching fellow totake over the practical research elements of the UCL MRes course in DrugDiscovery. On short notice we sourced all consumables, familiarized ourselveswith the lab, then supervised the 18 students through their 3-month projects;three of these students I was also directly supervising.
