Hamish studied civil and environmental engineering at Imperial College, London and the history of art at Christie's Education, London, in association with the University of Glasgow. Hamish is also a freelance artist, writer and sustainability consultant. His multi-disciplinary background led him to develop his research area in sustainable theatre, which looks at sustainable strategies. In 2017, he set up a production studio, Arctic Lion, which creatively applies his research in sustainable theatre.

Hamish's research interest is in the field of environmentally sustainable theatre and performing arts. Working directly with the theatre industry, Hamish has sought to develop sustainable, circular economy strategies for producing theatre in order to position sustainability as a creative tool rather than a constraint on artistic ambition. Hamish's work seeks to directly engage and aid the industry move towards a more sustainable mode of practice due to the importance and urgency of the climate crisis and consider what theatre can offer to help wider society overcome the environmental challenges faced in the 21st century.
Hamish has been a senior postgraduate teaching assistant on the MArch Architectural Design programme at the Bartlett School of Architecture for 2 years. He has lectured on sustainable theatre at Central School of Speech and Drama and the Paul Mellon Centre, Yale University.
