Biography

Huihuang Jia (MSc, UCL) is a Doctoral Researcher and Postgraduate Tutor in the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS), at UCL, where he contributes to modules such as Subtitling, Voiceover & Dubbing, Audio Description, Topics in Audiovisual Translation, and Translation Technologies. He serves as a Production Editor of the Journal of Audiovisual Translation (JAT) and as a Reviewer for several Translation Studies journals. His research interests lie in the field of Audiovisual Translation, and he is involved in numerous international research projects focused on this area. He is a member of the European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (ESIST), the Translators Association of China (TAC), the Chartered Institute of Linguistics (CIOL) and the Institute of Translators and Interpreters (ITI). Since 2022, he has been an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).

Research Summary

Huihuang’s doctoral study sets out to work in the emerging and blooming field of audiovisual translation (AVT), with special emphasis on cognitive approaches to subtitling. His research was supported by the British Council (Turing Scheme), UCL SELCS-CMII Departmental Funding and UCL Doctoral School. 

Title: How to Improve the Experience of Watching Subtitled Films: A Reception Research Study Utilising Eye Tracking and EEG


Research Supervision

Huihuang is particularly interested in audiovisual translation and media accessibility, and he also supervises MA/MSc research on these topics at CenTraS (5 students, completed).
