Research Summary

My research to date has examinedthe sociocultural context of psychotic disorders, with a focus on the higher risk of psychosis in ethnic minorities.

My PhD and postdoctoral work has made use of data from a European gene-environment interaction study (EU-GEI) in psychotic disorders. I have used data from this study to demonstrate that the treated incidence of psychotic disorders varies substantially between geographical settings, and that area-level sociocultural factors might play a part in explaining this.

My main interest is in the social determinants of health, and how experiences of multiple disadvantage interact to increase risk of poor mental health in (ethnic) minorities. I have studied this in ethnic minorities in the EU-GEI study, where I suggested that both social disadvantage and more identity- or culture-based forms of alienation were important risk factors for psychotic disorders.
