Previous to this, Helen worked in primary schools in London for 12 years, in which she had a range of roles in both leadership and the classroom.  She was both a literacy coordinator and literacy lead for Wandsworth local authority.  In 2008, Helen was appointed an Advanced Skills Teacher, providing teaching and support for trainee teachers and NQTs.  She also worked for Wandsworth local authority in an advisory role.   Helen has taken part in international research trips to Finland and to Canada.  

Helen Jones is currently researching her PhD thesis into children’s comics making at Goldsmiths University, having previously studied a foundation diploma at Camberwell College of Art, a BA (Hons) in Communication at Cardiff University, a PGCE in Primary Education at Middlesex University and an MA in Children’s Literature at Goldsmiths University.  

Helen is passionate about children’s literature, comics studies and how comics can be used in education.  She runs a weekly comics club for children, and has set up a comic lending library.  Helen contributes to the Comics Club Blog, which is full of comic making tips.

Research Summary

I am currently conducting doctoral research into children’s self-initiated comics making, funded by Goldsmiths University.  My PhD research involves me working with children in schools using Action Research as my methodology.  I work in a cross-disciplinary way, covering the fields of education, literature and comics studies.  I have presented my research at international conferences and I have published work both in academic journals and for a non-academic audience.
