Biography

Research Summary

My background is in music, psychology and education. Following a degree in music at Edinburgh University, I completed a secondary PGCE at Exeter St Luke's College in music. I then pursued a longstanding interest in psychology and gained a degree through the Open University (Hons 1st) and later undertook a PhD at King's College, London investigating motivation in terms of enrolment, retention and achievement at A-level. I also have an interest in the philosophy of education.

In 2003 I assisted with a cross-cultural study of motivation at Key Stage 3. I was a Research Fellow in the School of Applied Social Science at the University of Brighton for one year (2006-7) investigating social motivation and transition to higher education. At that time I also worked with John Webber to investigate a model for teaching and learning as well as the meaning of 'effective learner'. I joined UCL in 2008 as research assistant for the Music Futures project led by Sue Hallam and Andrea Creech, which was followed by the Music for Life project. In 20

In 2019 I was commissioned by the Society of Music Analysis to develop and implement a two-year research project entitled Questioning the Gap in Music Literacy in England: Defining a Role for the SMA. The full report is available on request. See https://www.sma.ac.uk/music-literacy-project/ for details of the project. I also worked with Lynne Rogers and Ken Spours on the Evaluation of Careers College project.
