Hans has previously led and delivered initial teacher training within a large FE/HE setting. He has managed teams to deliver undergraduate degree programmes in subjects including Criminology, Social Justice, Law and Business pathways. Hans has taught a range of secondary school subjects including Citizenship and RE at GCSE and A-Levels in Citizenship, Politics, Sociology and Law. Hans has taught English in the UK and abroad which included development in English language teacher education. He has been a Head of Citizenship and RE in a school in Luton and Head of Citizenship and Progression in a large London FE College. Hans has also worked in the charity sector creating and developing peace educational resources, teacher training and student workshops.

Hans contributes to numerous work based and voluntary projects to promote citizenship education and citizenship Initial Teacher Education across different teaching and charitable sectors. He has previously been a staff equality and diversity representative, an FE college staff board member and a higher education institution academic staff board member. Since 2014 Hans has been a member of the Association for Citizenship Teaching Council and became Vice Chair in 2017. In 2018 he became co-editor of practitioner led ACT journal 'Teaching Citizenship' and in 2020 a Trustee. After being a member of the Education Steering Group Hans become a Director (Trustee) of Diversity Role Models in 2022. Hans is a member of the Peace Education Network. Hans is also involved in the Council of Europe's 'Quality Education for All' framework and presented at the 'Strengthening Democratic Citizenship Education in Albania' conference in November 2020. 

During Hans' MA International Disaster Management at the Humanitarian Conflict and Response Institute at the University of Manchester Hans started to work on the connections that can be made between citizenship education and disaster management an area that Hans continues to be involved in through research bid writing including guest lecturing on the Reimagining Disaster Education: Perspectives and Methodologies MA Module from 2022.

At the IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society Hans leads and teaches the Post Graduate Certificate of Education in citizenship bringing together a range of expert speakers, mentors and practitioners to deliver outstanding citizenship pedagogy for the next generation of citizenship teachers. 

In 2021 Hans joined the Athena Swan Silver Self-Assessment Team and in Autumn of the same year won funding from the Centre for Teachers and Teaching Research to explore Teachers and Citizenship Knowledge. In 2022 Hans and a colleague convened the Peace Education Special Interest group at UCL: https://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/peaceeducation, Hans started reviewing for the journal of Education, Citizenship and Social Justice journal and become an Associate Fellow of the UCL Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education

In his spare time he is a keen explorer, whether that is through walking, reading, trying new food, traveling locally and abroad, learning new knowledge and skills or being involved in voluntary work.

Research Summary

Hans is interested in citizenship education, peace education and disaster preparedness education and how these can link together. Hans has had work published considering the prevent duty, counter violent extremism and teaching resources. In 2021 Hans became the principal investigator of a funded Centre for Teacher Training Research IOE research project titled Teachers and Citizenship Knowledge: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ioe/departments-and-centres/centres/centre-teachers-and-teaching-research/teachers-and-citizenship-knowledge working with academics from the IOE and Middlesex University.
