Helena is Professor of Mobility and Sustainable Transport in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at UCL. She joined UCL in 1997, working as a researcher in the Bartlett School of Planning, before leaving for a short period to work in the Transport Studies Group at the University of Westminster in 2003. She returned to UCL in 2004. Prior to working at UCL, Helena worked in the Energy and Environment Research Unit at the Open University, where she did her PhD on the sustainability assessment of city-wide energy strategies.
Helena's current research interests lie in the realm of sustainable systems, particularly transport systems. Previous research has focused on the development of decision support tools for local authorities, particularly computer models and tools for analysing the impacts of transport, land-use and energy policies, and the assessment of relationships between transport, land-use and the environment. Helena also has a strong interest in GIS-T applications. More recent research has focused on the social dimensions of sustainability, in particular on the links between social exclusion, transport provision and other urban systems. Helena has worked with a range of companies, government organisations and NGOs through both research collaborations and consultancy including RPS group, Ipsos MORI, Transport for London, and BT.
