Biography

I am an Associate Professor in Health Informatics and a fellow at the Alan Turing Institute. I had the privilege to have worked at University of Aberdeen, King's College London and University of Edinburgh. I still hold visiting research positions at the latter two. I was funded by Health Data Research UK for my UKRI Rutherford fellowship, of which I did the first part (Feb 2018 - Apr 2020) at Centre for Medical Informatics, University of Edinburgh and the second part (May 2020 - Sep 2022) at Institute of Health Informatics, UCL. I got my BEng and PhD degrees from Southeast University, China.

Research Themes
Research Summary

I lead a health informatics group - KnowLab and co-lead the Clinical NLP group in Edinburgh University. I hold a PhD in Computing Science. My current research interest is in using text technologies and Knowledge Graph techniques to analyse health data. I am particularly interested in combining data driven machine learning approaches (e.g., deep learning) with knowledge driven methods (e.g., symbolic inference). If you want to know more, please check our group website for specific research we are doing. I work closely with NHS Trusts and health boards across the UK to use artificial intelligence technologies in research and health service improvement (current funded projects). I serve as an editorial board member of these journals: BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making and Scientific Reports.

Teaching Summary
I teach Python, machine learning (including natural language processing), and knowledge representations (including knowledge graphs) in a few modules across our IHI MSc programmes as follows.

I supervise around 4 MSc students at IHI every year with projects around machine learning in general, particularly on NLP and knowledge graphs. Please check the list of current/past MSc projects that I offered.

For Prospective PhD students

I accept PhD students. The following is the list of CDT/DTP programmes, from which I can supervise MRes/PhD projects.

For overseas students, you might also be interested in Overseas Research Scholarship.
