Biography

My interest in applied freshwater ecology stems from my MSc in Aquatic Resource Management, which I studied at King’s College London. I moved to UCL for my PhD in Physical Geography, in which I investigated the causes for the declining distribution of the rare aquatic plant Najas flexilis. The findings from this work have been used by NatureScot (formerly Scottish Natural Heritage) to inform conservation efforts for this protected species. Post-PhD I worked for the environmental NGO Earthwatch Europe, where I ran a global citizen science project called FreshWater Watch, before returning to UCL as a Lecturer in Ecology.

Research Themes
Research Summary

I use science to help improve the state of the world’s freshwater resources. Working at the interface between ecology and geography, I explore complex interactions between environmental and social systems. I’m particularly interested in combining data from different sources and understanding how the findings can be applied in practice to help reverse global and local declines in freshwater biodiversity. Citizen science and community involvement in freshwater conservation are important themes within my work.

Teaching Summary

I’m working with the cross-faculty UCL East team on the new MSc programmes that sit within the People and Nature Lab. I’ll be teaching across MSc Citizen Science and MSc Ecology and Data Science from September 2022. I’m module lead for ‘The Practice of Citizen Science’.

At undergraduate level, I’m coordinating a new first year module on Biodiversity and Conservation. This is due to start in 2023.
