Biography

I am an Associate Professor of Physics in the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy at University College London (UCL), where I am part of both the Biological Physics and AMOPP groups. I joined UCL in May 2013 as a Senior Research Fellow funded by a UCL Excellence Fellowship award to carry out biophysics multidisciplinary research and to contribute to the development of effective research links between UCL and the Francis Crick Institute. I became a Lecturer in 2016. I was awarded a Sabbatical Attachment at the Francis Crick Institute to work with Dr. Pavel Tolar in 2016-2017.

We carry out research on magnetic, optical and electrical methods to manipulate microparticles in solution with the main aim of investigating interactions in biological systems.


Our main research topics include:

  • Investigation of molecular interactions relevant to virus entry into living cells via single molecule force spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy, in collaboration with Prof. Mark Marsh (UCL MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology);
  • New microscopy development: combined light-sheet fluorescence microscopy and optical tweezers for force-sensing;
  • Development of novel magnetic force-sensing methods for experiments near living cell surfaces;
  • Manipulation of graphitic microparticles in solution using electric and magnetic fields, in collaboration with Prof. Sonia Contera (Dept. Physics, Univ. of Oxford);
  • Investigation of the role of physical forces in antigen extraction by B cells, in collaboration with Dr. Pavel Tolar (Francis Crick Institute).
